Bomba Estéreo is a Columbian band founded in 2005 by Simón Mejía[1]. However, the band originated in 2001 as A.M. 770, a loose collective of visual artists and musicians which Mejía was part of. A.M. 770's first musical production was the track "Ritmika", which appeared on the 2002 compilation album Colombeat. By 2005, A.M. 770 developed into Mejía's solo project; deciding to focus specifically on music, he changed the group's name. The first music released under the Bomba Estéreo title was Volumen 1 (2006), a de facto solo album but featuring Mejía that featured contributions from other artists. Two such artists fellow A.M. 770 member Diego Cadavid and Santa Maria-born singer and rapper Liliana "Li" Saumet, who performed on the track "Huepaje".

By the time Bomba Estéreo's sophomore album Estalla (2008) was released, it developed into a full band, with Saumet as vocalist, Mejía on bass and keyboard programming, Cadavid on percussion, Julián Salazar on guitar, and Enrique "Kike" Egurrola on drums. Estalla was released in the US in 2009 under the name Blow Up, and its single "Fuego" was a success, attracting fans outside of Columbia. Their third album Elegancia Tropical, was released in 2012, while their fourth album Amanecer (2005) spawned the viral hit "Soy Yo"; a shortened and clean version of that song appeared in Sing 2.
