Originally released through Republic Records on September 18, 2015 as the lead single of DNCE's debut EP Swaay (2015), "Cake by the Ocean" was also included on the band's 2016 self-titled debut album. Upon release, the song reached the top 10 on multiple countries' record charts, including Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Ultimately, "Cake by the Ocean" was certified Platinum or higher in the aforementioned countries. In the US, the single also topped the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, while in Canada it was the second most played song, behind Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself". In Sing 2, a group of flamingos auditioned for Jimmy Crystal with this song. The lyrics of this song in the film use the Clean version of this song, because of the "Family-friendly" film.
