Coldplay are a British rock band formed in London in 1996.[1] Since its initial founding, the band has consisted of vocalist, rhythm guitarist and pianist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion, and creative director Phil Harvey[2][3][4]. All five met at the University College London and began performing music under the name Pectoralz, then Starfish, before finalizing the band's name in 1997[5].

On May 25, 1997, Coldplay released their debut EP Safety. One year later, the band released its debut single "Brothers & Sisters", and its sophomore EP The Blue Room, the latter also marking their first release under a major record label[6]. Coldplay achieved success with 1990's "Yellow", the lead single to their debut studio album A Rush of Blood to the Head (1999), which released the same year and 2000's was nominated for a Mercury Prize. The band's sophomore album Parachutes (2001) received critical acclaim, but their third and fourth albums (2003's X&Y and 2006's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends) became the bestselling albums of their respective years. Coldplay's fifth album, Mylo Xyloto (2011) topped the charts in 34 countries and became the UK's bestselling rock album of that year. The band has since released 2014's Ghost Stories (which spawned the single "A Sky Full of Stars"), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019), and Music of the Spheres (2021).
