Dolly Rebecca Parton (born January 19, 1946) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instumentalist, record producer, actress, author, businesswoman, and humanitarian best known for her work in country music. First achieving success as a songwriter for others, Parton would release her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, in 1967. While successful for the remainder of the 1960s (as both a solo artist and with a series of duet albums with Porter Wagoner), Parton reached the peak of her fame during the 1970s. This success continued through the 1980s, but Parton's albums in the 1990s failed to sell as well. However, she obtained commercial success again in the 2000s after releasing albums on various independant labels, including her own Dolly Records. Parton has composed over 3,000 songs, including "I Will Always Love You" (which topped the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice and became an international pop hit when covered by Whitney Houston), "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors", and "9 to 5". As an actress, she has starred in films such as 1980's 9 to 5 (which the song of the same name was written for), Rhinestone (1984), Steel Magnolias (1989), Straight Talk (1992), and Joyful Noise (2012).
