Andwele Gardner (born February 14, 1978), better known by his stage name Dwele, is an American soul singer, songwriter, and record producer born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in a musical family, Dwele played piano from the age of six, later taking up trumpet, bass, and guitar[2][3]. In 2000, he recorded the demo album Rize his bedroom, and sold 100 copies out of the trunk of his car[2]. The album caught the ears of Detroit hip hop group Slum Village and world-renowned producer J-Dilla[3], who invited Dwele to sing the hook of song "Tainted" from their album Trinity (Past, Present, and Future). The song was successful and led more high profile work rapper Bahamadia, supergroup Lucy Pearl, and London's New Sector Movement[3]. In 2003, Dwele signed to label Virgin Records, which released his debut album, Subject, the same year[2]. Dwele released his sophomore album Some Kinda... in 2005[2], while in 2007 he featured on Kanye West's hit single "Flashing Lights", which appeared in Sing.
