Edward Christopher Sheeran (born February 17, 1991) is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actor. In 2009, Sheeran began attending the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford as an undergraduate, as well as releasing You Need Me, the first of five EPs intended to attract a record label. The four successive EPs were 2010's Loose Change, which contained Sheeran's future debut single "The A Team", Songs I Wrote with Amy, Live at the Bedford, and 2011's No. 5 Collaborations Project. Three months after the release of the latter EP, Sheeran signed with Asylum Records. In September 2011, Sheeran released his debut studio album, +. It topped the UK and Australian charts, peaked at No. 5 in the US, and was ultimately certified 7x Platinum in the UK. In addition, single "The A Team" won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 2012, Sheeran won Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Artist. "The A Team" was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards, where Sheeran performed the song live with Elton John. Sheeran released his sophomore studio album, x, in June 2014. The album again topped the UK and Australian charts, as well as reaching No. 1 in the US, and was the third best-selling album of the year worldwide. In 2015, x won the Brit Award for Album of the Year, while Sheeran won the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year. The album contained hit singles "Thinking Out Loud", which won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2016 Grammy Awards, and "Sing", which was used to promote the movie of the same name. On March 2017, Sheeran released his third studio album, ÷, which became the best-selling album of that year. The album's first two singles, "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill", debuted in the top two positions of multiple countries' charts. Sheeran also became the first artist to have two songs debut in the US top ten in the same week.
