Stephani Johanne Angelina Germanotta (ˈstɛfəni ˌdʒɜːrməˈnɒtə; born March 28, 1986), known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwritter, and actress known for her unconventionality, visual experimentation, and provocative work. Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing at open mic nights and acting in school plays. Gaga studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21 through the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, but ultimately dropped out to pursue a music career; she initially signed to Def Jam Recordings in September 2006, but was dropped after only three months. Gaga then worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where in 2007 artist Akon helped her sign a joint deal with Interscope Records and his own label KonLive Distribution. One year later, Gaga rose to prominence with her debut electropop album The Fame, which spawned the US Billboard Hot 100 topping singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". Her debut EP, The Fame Monster, was similarly successful and featured the singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and "Alejandro". Gaga experimented with electronic rock and techno pop on her sophomore album, Born This Way (2011). It sold more than one million copies in the US during the first week of its release, and ultimately peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Its title track also became the fastest selling song on the iTunes Store, with over one million downloads in less than a week. Gaga's third studio album, the EDM-influenced Artpop (2013), also reached number one in the US and contains the single "Applause". Successive albums Cheek to Cheek (2014) (a collaborative album with Tony Bennett), and Joanne (2016) continued to top the US charts. During this period, Gaga ventured into acting. She had lead roles in the miniseries American Horror Story: Hotel (2015-2016), for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and the critically acclaimed remake of A Star is Born (2018). Gaga contributed to the latter's soundtrack, which won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and made her the first female artist to achieve five consecutive number one albums in the 2010s. Its lead single, "Shallow", earned Gaga the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song. Read more here...
