Mercury Rev is an American indie rock bank founded in 1989 at the University at Buffalo. Its initial members (vocalist David Baker, vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Donahue, guitarist and clarinetist Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak, bass guitarist Dave Fridmann and drummer Jimy Chambers) formed the band to score their student films[5]. In 1991, Mercury Rev released their debut album, Yerself Is Steam, followed by Boces in 1993. Though achieving considerable critical acclaim[6], neither album rose beyond cult success[7]. Baker left the band after Boces release, citing musical and personal disputes. In 1995, Mercury Rev released their first post-Baker album, See You On the Other Side. Later that year the band released Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void under the moniker "Harmony Rockets". After reestablishing themselves in Donahue's birthplace of Kingston, New York[5], Mercury Rev released their commercial breakthrough, Deserter's Songs (1998), which spawned the UK Top 40 singles "Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp", "Opus 40" and "Goddess on a Hiway". The band also released "Holes" as a fourth single exclusive to Australia. Read more here… References
