Out of This World

Out of This World is a science fiction-themed theatrical stage play produced by Buster Moon in Sing 2.

Role in Sing 2

When Buster and his friends are initially rejected after auditioning for media mogul Jimmy Crystal, Gunter proposes an idea for a sci-fi musical featuring songs from former rock star legend Clay Calloway. The mention of Clay catches Jimmy's attention, prompting Buster to promise that he can get Clay, who has been reclusive and unreachable for fifteen years, to perform in the show. Jimmy allows Buster to produce Out of This World and gives him three weeks to do so, but Buster initially experiences several setbacks due to lacking ideas and being forced by Jimmy to give his daughter, Porsha, a role in the show.

Rosita, who was given the starring role, is too afraid to practice a stunt she must do in the show, and her role is given to Porsha. However, while Porsha is a good singer, she is bad at acting. Jimmy, having learned that Buster lied to him about being able to recruit Clay, threatens to throw Buster out his window if he still can't get Clay to perform by the time Out of This World is ready. Buster then rushes to Clay's house and takes Ash with him in an attempt to convince him to perform in their show. Buster instructs Gunter to finish the show's plot and Miss Crawly to take over production in his absence.

While Ash convinces Clay to start playing music again, Buster returns to the set and, upon seeing more of Porsha's bad acting, decides he needs to give Rosita the starring role back. While trying to explain to Porsha that he needs to find a new role for her, she accuses Buster of firing her and angrily storms out to tell her dad. As news of her being "fired" is televised, a furious Jimmy attempts to kill Buster, but is called to make an appearance on live TV with Linda Le Bon before he can finish the job. He announces on TV that he has shut down production of Out of This World because of Buster.

Determined to still put on the show despite Jimmy's threats, Buster convinces everyone to perform Out of This World behind Jimmy's back as a free, one-night-only performance at the Crystal Tower Theater. As Jimmy and his thugs come for Buster, Johnny calls Big Daddy and his gang to act as security guards and fight them off during the show. Jimmy sees Porsha performing in the show and deems her as a traitor as he is trapped by Buster. He is eventually freed by Jerry and sets out to attack Buster again by throwing him off a tower from the stage, but Rosita, conquering her fear of heights, catches and saves him during her musical number from Jimmy’s Breaking Point.

When it is almost Clay's turn to perform, he is initially terrified and refuses to come out and sing, but eventually gains the courage to do so after hearing Ash and the audience sing his song, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. He duets with Ash in the show's finale, and his first performance in fifteen years. As the show ends, Buster and the performers come out to take a bow and are cheered on by the audience. Jimmy then comes out and tries to take the credit for producing the show and recruiting Clay, but he soon realizes that Buster and the crew have left the stage. and he is left alone on the stage with the audience laughing at him before he is arrested by the police.

As everyone departs Redshore City on a bus, talent scout Suki Lane catches up to them and tells them that The Majestic Palace Theater wants to produce their show. The movie ends as everyone prepares to perform once again and Buster looks on in Awe.

Story

Captain Rosita, an astronaut and star of the show, sets out on a mission to find and rescue a space explorer (Clay Calloway) who went missing long ago. Her trusty robot, Gunter, picks up his signal, but cannot tell which of the four planets ahead of them the signal is coming from, so Rosita decides they will have to explore them all.

Their first destination is the Planet of War, where warrior Johnny performs A Sky Full of Stars. Johnny sings and plays the piano as other warriors dressed in blue approach and stand guard. He continues to sing as he joins them and they start dancing. Klaus Kickenklober, his formal dance instructor, arrives with his own group of warriors dressed in red, and challenges Johnny to a dance battle as a ring of fire surrounds them. Johnny is unwary and caught off guard, and Klaus initially defeats him, but Nooshy rhythmically drums on a barrel from offstage to motivate Johnny, and he gets up and confidently challenges Klaus again, this time beating him. Klaus then bows to him.

Rosita's search then takes her to the second planet, the Planet of Joy. Porsha, an alien, sings Could Have Been Me as she pops black balloons shaped like frowning aliens to make way for bright and colorful balloons resembling smiling ones. Much larger colorful balloons appear before the performance's climax, where the Night Cleaners join Porsha as background dancers and singers. They then surround her and form a tower she stands on top of for her finale.

Rosita reports there is still no sign of the missing space explorer, and moves on to the Planet of Love, where Meena and Darius perform I Say a Little Prayer in a romantic duet. Darius takes her hand and leads her up a flight of stairs and onto the rings of Saturn, where they then kiss before making their way back down to the stage.

Gunter informs Rosita that their ship cannot land on the last planet because of a large wormhole that would be dangerous for the ship to fly through. Rosita realizes they have to go through the wormhole on their own without the ship, and performs Break Free with Gunter as they fly around the stage and successfully make it to the final planet, an icy planet of despair.

On the Planet of Despair, Rosita initially cannot find any sign of life, and only an empty cave is present. Ash comes out of the cave and sings I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and Clay soon joins in as they perform a duet. The mission is deemed a success, and everyone is beamed up into the spaceship and heads home.

Trivia

  • During I Say a Little Prayer, Meena imagines Darius is her crush, Alfonso, and it is Alfonso who is seen performing with her out-of-universe.
