Queen are a British rock band that formed in London in 1970.  Their classic line-up consisted of lead vocalist and pianist Freddie Mercury, guitarist and vocalist Brian May, drummer and vocalist Roger Taylor, and bass guitarist John Deacon. Queen's earliest recordings were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, but as the band incorporated further styles into their work, such as arena rock and pop rock, they gradually shifted to a more radio-friendly sound.

Before forming Queen, May and Taylor performed together in the band Smile. Mercury was a fan and encouraged them to experiment with more extravagant recording and stage techniques. In 1970, Mercury officially joined the band and suggested the name "Queen". In March 1971, Deacon was recruited as bass guitarist, and the quartet released their debut album Queen in 1973. The band first charted in the UK with their sophomore album, 1974's Queen II. With Sheer Heart Attack (1974) and A Night at the Opera (1975), Queen achieved international success. The latter spawned the single "Bohemian Rhapsody", which topped the UK charts for nine weeks. Queens 1977 album News of the World contains the single "We Will Rock You"/"We Are the Champions"; both songs became sporting event anthems. By the early 1980s, Queen became one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. The Game (1980) contains the song "Another One Bites the Dust", which became their best-selling single. In 1981, the single "Under Pressure", a collaboration with David Bowie, peaked at No. 1 on the UK charts. The compilation album Greatest Hits was released that same year, and would eventually become the best-selling album of all time in the UK and be certified 8X Platinum in the US.

In August 1986, Mercury gave his final performance with Queen at Knebworth, England. He ultimately passed away in 1991, while Deacon retired in 1997. Since 2004, May and Taylor have toured under the "Queen +" moniker with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
