Stephen Lawrence "Steve" Winwood (born May 12, 1948) is an English musician and songwriter whose music included rock, blue-eyed soul, rhythm and blues, blues rock, pop rock, and jazz songs. Though primarily a vocalist and keyboardist, Winwood also plays guitar, bass guitar, drums, the saxophone, and the mandolin. Through the 1960s and 1970s, Winwood was a key member of bands the Spencer Davis Group (where he wrote hit songs such as "Gimme Some Lovin'"), Traffic, and the supergroup Blind Faith. However, after Traffic embarked on a grueling US tour in 1974, Winwood experienced burnout and retired to work as a session musician for three years. In 1977, Winwood recorded a self-titled solo album following pressure from label Island Records. This began a successful solo career, with his sophomore album Arc of a Diver (1980) and third album Talking Back to the Night (1982) producing the hit singles "While You See a Chance" and "Valerie", respectively. Winwoods' fourth album Back in the High Life (1986) would be his greatest success, spawning the hit singles "Back in the High Life Again", "The Finer Things", and Winwood's first song to top the US Billboard Hot 100: "Higher Love".
